WELCOME TO GEAR UP FUTURES/INTEREST CLUBS (5/3 to 5/31, 2003)

                         

Futures/Interest Clubs offer students who have career interests in the areas of Education, Business, Engineering, and Health Care and allow them to explore careers and create contacts with role models to shadow. Futures/Interest Clubs invite local  professionals from the community and the University of Toledo who will act as advisers and encourage students to select their best future careers. 

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                

GOALS   

Future/Interest Clubs:

·  Offer necessary information to the students and their parents regarding specific disciplines.

·  Provide youth with alternative life/work options through increased exposure to educational and career planning resources.

·  Utilize volunteers within the community to provide students with examples of    successful leadership.

·  Plan activities to create interest in continuing a positive educational experience.

·  Encourage the entrepreneurial spirit and teach students to develop business plans and successful business strategies.

·  Improve confidence of the students it serves by providing opportunities to explore innovative ways to present mathematics and science.

 OBJECTIVES 

Develop and provide program services, which address the issues of

·   Fostering by raising students' achievement level

·   Improving comprehension of career choices

·   Choosing a career based on research of a specific discipline

                             Future/Interest Clubs offer various fields: 

  Medical, Science/Engineer, Business,  and Performing Arts

    All GEAR UP students are welcome to participate any one of Future/interest clubs at your choice.

First Meeting : The Future/Interest clubs met on February 18, 2002. Students

enjoyed talking with an attorney about law fields and discussed current 

issues -HOT topic - Olympic Winter Games.

Second Meeting: The Future/Interest Club met on March 2nd, 2002, 12:00-1:30

p.m. in Palmer Hall. 

Third Meeting: The Future/Interest Clubs met on March 11, 2002 at 2:30-4:00 p.m.

at Jones Junior High School.

Fourth Meeting: The Future/Interest Clubs met on April 17,2002 at 2:30-4:00 p.m.

at Jones Junior High School and April 29,2002 at 2:30-4:00 p.m. at Robinson

Junior High School.

Fifth Meeting:  The Future/Interest Club met on April 29,2002 at 2:30-4:00 p.m.

at Robinson Junior High School.

Sixth Meeting: The Future/Interest Club met on May 4th, 2002, 1:00-2:00 p.m. 

in Palmer Hall. 

Seventh Meeting: The Future/Interest Club met on October 19th, 2002, 1:00-2:00

p.m. in Palmer Hall. Guess Speakers: Dr. Jenkins, and COSI Representative

Ms. Beredo. 

Eighth Meeting: The Future/Interest Club met on Nov. 16th, 2002, 1:00-2:00

p.m. in Palmer Hall. Guess speakers: Dr. Smith and Mr. Williams.

Ninth Meeting: The Future/Interest Club  met on Jan. 18th, 2003, 2:30-3:30

p.m. at Jones Junior High school. Guess speakers:  Musician

Mr. Vaughn and Ms. Jefferson.

Tenth Meeting: The Future/Interest Club  met on Feb. 11th, 2003, 2:30-3:30

p.m. at Robinson Junior High school. Guess speakers: Mrs. McClellan 

 

Eleventh: The Future/Interest Club  met on Feb. 19th, 2003, 2:30-4:00

p.m. at Jones Junior High school. Guess speakers: Ms. Angie Pittman

Making Career Choices

Deciding on what to do with one's life is not easy. Making a good career choice requires  knowledge and an  understanding of one's abilities and interests. Future/Interest clubs will help you with the decision making process by providing information about the following:

        The need for further education beyond high school

        Average lifetime earnings according to education level

        The critical role of personal motivation

        The relationship between time and money

        Definition of a career

  Differences between a career and a job

  Career options versus educational requirements

  The four critical skills businesses expect their workers to possess
